UTPA Women’s Golf Opens ORU Shootout Monday
September 29, 2012 — TULSA, Oklahoma — The University of Texas-Pan American women’s golf team competes at the ORU Shootout, presented by Bob Hurley Auto Family, on Monday and Tuesday at Meadowbrook Country Club.
Each day will feature a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. with 36 holes taking place on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday.
The course is 6,212 yards long and a par 72.
The field consists of 13 teams:
1. Oral Roberts (Host)
3. Arkansas State
5. Houston Baptist
7. McLennan Community College
8. McNeese State
9. Sam Houston State
10. Southern Utah
11. Stephen F. Austin
12. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Last Year at the ORU Shootout
The Broncs finished 12th out of 14 schools by shooting a 980 (331, 322, 327), eight strokes shy of the top 10. Three Broncs who participated in last year’s event will participate in this one as well, including junior Samantha Parrao, who finished tied for 43rd with a 244 (85, 76, 83), junior Elena Arroyo, who finished 63rd with a 256 (87, 79, 90) and sophomore Blake Peterson, who finished tied for 66th with a 258 (89, 86, 83).
Last Time Out
The Broncs finished eighth out of 15 teams at the CSU Cougar Classic, presented by Swingbyte, September 17-18. Arroyo led the way with a two-round 155, including the lowest single-round score on the team with a first round 75. She finished tied for sixth.
Don’t Mess with Texas
Seven out of the nine student-athletes on the Broncs’ roster are from Texas, including two from the Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg-native Parrao and sophomore and Edcouch-native Ashley Garcia. The other Texans on the Broncs are senior Sarah Kothny (Kingwood), sophomore Marisa Canales (League City) and freshmen Juliette Crook (Lampasas), Rachel Gere (Kingwood) and Haley Sauls (Austin).
The Broncs travel to Sam Houston State for a tournament on October 8 and 9.
